Classical Syriac is one of the most attested of the Aramaic languages and its literature spans almost 20 centuries. It is an important language for Biblical Studies, Late Antiquity, early interactions with Islam and beyond. Syriac was one of the main literary languages of the Middle East up to the Mongol period after which it retreated to a more ecclesiastical setting. Classical Syriac continues to be produced by its communities even in the twenty-first century.
The course at Polis is intended to familiarize students with the language through natural learning methods. From the first day, all lessons are conducted in Classical Syriac using immersion techniques. The course is designed to provide speaking skills that, with physical practice, will allow the student to connect with the language and store new information in long-term memory, and reading skills in order to approach original texts without the reliance on or reference to translations. Finally, the written exercises will enable students to perfect their mastery of this ancient but lively and beautiful language.
