The Hittites have several claims to fame: for leaving the earliest written evidence of an Indo-European language, for producing important textual sources for understanding biblical religion and as one of the most powerful empires in the ancient Near East in the 2nd millennium BCE. In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of Hittite grammar as well as a broad acquaintance with the various genres of text composed by Hittite scribes, including law, rituals, historiography and letters.
